As we age, our body goes through a multitude of changes. One of the most apparent forms of these changes is present on our skin. The skin gradually begins to lose elasticity causing the surrounding areas to become saggy and loose. Arms, among many other parts of the body, are greatly affected by this change. Moreover, for many other individuals, sagging arm can also be caused by drastic weight loss. Thankfully, arm lift (also known as brachioplasty) is a viable solution to this problem. This procedure works by removing the excess fat and loose skin situated in the upper arms and delivers a more toned and lean look.
Good candidates for having an arm lift are people who have undergone weight loss, but are left with loose hanging skin on their upper arms. Arm lift is a procedure that tightens flabby and saggy skin and restores firmness by giving arms the more tightened and solid definition they should have.
Arm lift can also benefit people in their old age; however, the preferred candidates are those individuals who are under the age of sixty-five. Why is that? Mainly because anyone older than sixty-five can pose additional risks and complications and the surgeon will need to conduct some additional tests to see if the person is capable of getting the surgery performed.
In any case, prior to having the surgery done, it is important to get the body in a healthy shape so the complications during and/or after the surgery will be minimized. In addition, if you are a smoker, it is extremely important that you stop smoking at least a week in advance. Chemicals in cigarettes are known to interfere with the healing process.
There are two methods of doing an arm lift depending on the extent of the sagging skin and the amount of fat being removed. For smaller procedures, the optimal choice is the mini arm lift, while for larger ones there is the standard arm lift.
The mini arm lift is ideal for removing small to moderate amounts of sagging skin and cannot be used in cases where a person has lots of skin that needs trimming. The incisions for mini arm lift are small and placed on the armpit only. On the other hand, the standard arm lift can be performed to remove a substantial amount of sagging skin. This procedure is normally done by making an incision from the armpit to the elbow. Then, the excess skin is trimmed off, the fatty deposits are removed, and finally the skin is brought together and sutured. The procedure can last anywhere from two to three hours.
In the days following the surgery, you will be required to avoid applying too much pressure on the arm. Routine tasks will also be hampered for about two weeks. It will take about two to three weeks for the majority of swelling and bruises to diminish and about six weeks for you to begin any strenuous activities. Bandages, compression garments, and drainage tubes may also be administered to help with the healing process.
