Blepharoplasty

516-965-3800

Droopy eyelids, hanging eyebrows, puffiness, and dark circles under the eyes are all common concerns of patients who consider a blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery. Ptosis (droopy eyelids) can make one appear tired and worn out throughout the day. In extreme cases, the eyelids can interfere with a person’s vision. Puffy eyes can be temporarily caused by several factors such as lack of sleep, old age, and even crying excessively. However, if the puffiness/enlargement is permanent, then it is most likely the case of orbital fat pushing towards the skin which can be treated with blepharoplasty.

While living a healthy lifestyle and getting proper rest are both crucial to maintaining healthy looking eyes, sometimes these conditions persist even after taking all preventive measures. Blepharoplasty covers a few different forms of eyelid-related surgical procedures to remove imperfections around the eyes and enhance their overall appearance.

The Difference Between Upper & Lower Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty can be performed as an upper or lower eyelid surgery. Upper eyelids suffer from excess skin or fat deposits which can cause the eyelids to become loose and hang. Such upper eyelids can be corrected through removal of excess skin or fat, then reattaching the remainder of the skin to construct a more tightened and taut appearance. The resulting eyes will appear much more attentive, wide-opened, and energetic – just the way eyes should be.

Lower eyelids carry similar problems as the upper ones. Excess fat and skin in the lower eyelids can result in puffy or baggy eyes. For older individuals, wrinkles and creases can also form below the eyes. Just like with upper blepharoplasty, in lower blepharoplasty, the skilled surgeons at Madison Avenue Plastic Surgery carefully remove fat and skin to get rid of the bags under the eyes and eliminate enlargement.

How Is A Blepharoplasty Procedure Performed?

Upper Blepharoplasty Procedure

Upper blepharoplasty begins by precisely defining the site where the incisions will be made. Once the markings are placed, the surgeon will then proceed to making the incisions. The incisions are usually made near the upper region of the eyelids where the eyeball starts curving in and are hidden on the natural creases of the eyelids.

After incising, the outer layer of the skin is opened to reveal eye muscles. If there is a need to remove muscles, some of them will be removed at this stage. Underneath the muscles are fat responsible for making the eyelids look thick and heavy. Once this fat is removed or repositioned, the surgeon will carefully apply sutures to close the incisions.

Lower Blepharoplasty Procedure

When it comes to lower blepharoplasty, two types of incisions may be used – transcutaneous or transconjunctival. With transcutaneous technique, our skilled surgeons will make a fine incision just below the lower eyelid. There will be a scar present as this incision heals. A transconjunctival incision, commonly used by surgeons, is placed on the inner sides of the lower eyelids. Thus, there won’t be any visible scars after the surgery.

While both methods have their pros and cons, the goal is the same. The surgeon will gain access to a region in the eye socket called orbital septum – a thin fibrous membrane sheet. Under the orbital septum are fat deposits responsible for causing bags under the eyes. Upper and lower blepharoplasties both require either local or general anesthesia. The surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis and can last anywhere from one to two hours.

Recovering from a Blepharoplasty

Since eyelid surgery only requires very small and precise incisions, the recovery period is relatively short compared to some other forms of cosmetic surgeries. In general, these are some common factors which surgeons at New York’s Madison Avenue Plastic Surgery believe most patients can anticipate during the recovery:

  • Bruising and swelling are to be expected immediately after the surgery. Minor pain or itching sensations may also be present, but be careful not to rub your eyes. Blurriness is also common.
  • Be sure to follow all directions given to you by your doctor which may include applying cold compresses for the first few days. In addition, eye drops may also be prescribed as well as ointments.
  • As the eyelids heal, try to avoid eye-straining activities like watching TV or sitting in front of the computer for long hours.
  • For up to a month post-surgery, avoid any strenuous activities. You should also wear sunglasses when going out in the sun during this time, as well.
